Gozo is one of the three Maltese islands. The Gozotians are a fiercely traditional people. The woman doing her family washing in the town of Fontana illustrates this. Malta gained it's independence in the 1960's . Malta has always had a major importance due to it's position on the Mediterranean shipping routes. Malta was awarded the George Cross in recognition of the bravery of the Maltese people during World War 2. The Architecture of Malta is most striking , being constructed from the local limestone rock all the buildings have a natural colour and are built in a style which is similar to North Africa. This contrasts with the red post boxes and telephone boxes in the British style. They also drink pints of beer ( I can recommend the Blue Label beer).
